In September 2026, Baxi launched Megaflo Essential which is a new lower-cost range that sits alongside the long-standing Megaflo Eco. Same badge, same mains-pressure hot water, a smaller bill.
So what do you actually give up by going Essential? Not much, for most jobs. Here's a straight-talking breakdown of the two ranges, and why we think Essential is the smarter buy for the majority of standard installs.
What is Megaflo Essential?
Megaflo Essential is Baxi's new budget-friendly unvented range, built in response to installers asking for a Megaflo that fits tighter budgets and more heat pump jobs. It comes in three versions:
- Essential Direct - heated by twin 3kW immersions. ideal for homes off the gas grid. 170L, 210L, 250L, and 300L
- Essential Indirect - for system and heat-only boilers, with a coil-in-coil heat exchanger. 170L, 210L 250L, and 300L
- Essential ASHP - Megaflos' first heat pump cylinder, with a large surface area coil, a boost immersion, and secondary return. 210L, 250L, and 300L
The Direct and Indirect models use Megaflo's new internal expansion system so there's no separate expansion vessel to hang on the wall. Every model has a stainless-steel inner tank and is KIWA approved.
What is Megaflo Eco?
Megaflo Eco is the cylinder that made the name and Baxi still positions it as the premium option. It's had a refresh too, picking up the same improved internal expansion as the Essential.
Where Eco pulls ahead is choice. Alongside standard Direct and Indirect models from 70L to 300L, there are Slimline, Solar, Solar PV Ready, SystemFit, and SystemReady versions. You also get thicker 60mm insulation and a 30 year warranty on the tank.

The Key Differences Explained
Hot Water Delvery - Practically Identical
This is the bit that matters most to the end user, and it's a dead heat. At 170L Indirect, Essential delivers 215L of mixed water at 40°C. Eco delivers 214L. Same showers, same baths, same happy customers.
Warranty - 20 Years vs 30 Year
Essential's inner tank is covered for 20 years, Eco;s for 30 years. 20 years is still a long time for a warrnty and most homeowners will have moved, renovated, or both before it runs out.
Insulation and Heat Loss
Essential uses 50mm of foam, Eco uses 60mm. In real terms, the 170L Essential Indirect looses 1.54kWh a day, against 1.35kWh for the Eco. That's roughly 70kWh a year which is les than £20 at typical electricity prices, and less again on gas. It's also why Essential is rated ErP C, while most Eco sizes hit B.
Heat-Up Time
From cold the 170L Eco Indirect coil heats up in 28 minutes. The Essential takes about 41 minutes. On a busy family morning, Eco bounces back quicker. For most households on a times boiler, nobody will notice.
Size
Every Essential Direct and Indirect cylinder is 552mm wide against a standard 579mm Eco. THose 26mm can make all the difference in a tight airing cupboard.
Range
Essential starts at 170L. So, if you need anything from 70L-145L, or a different range, then an Eco is the better choice
Heat Pumps
The Essential ASHP is the only Megafo built for air source heat pumps. It gets a 2-3m² coil for heat-up in under 30 minutes, 60mm insulation, a boost immersion, and secondary return. Note that it carries a 10-year tank warranty and ships with a separate expansion vessel (18L or 24L), unlike the internal expansion on the Direct and Indirect models.
Why We'd Choose Megaflo Essential
Here's our honest take: for a standard 170L–300L replacement on a gas boiler or off-grid electric job, Essential is the right product. You're paying Eco money for a longer warranty and 10mm more foam — not for more hot water.
- Same Megaflo performance. The hot water output is virtually identical, and your customer still gets the name they asked for.
- Lower upfront cost. Better margin on the quote, or a more competitive price for the customer. Either way, it's easier to win the job.
- Internal expansion as standard. No external vessel on the Direct and Indirect models means quicker installs and less to service.
- Slimmer footprint. At 553mm wide, it squeezes into cupboards where an Eco can be a tight fit.
- A 20-year tank warranty. Plenty of peace of mind for the typical homeowner.
- Heat pump ready. If you're fitting an ASHP, Essential is the only Megaflo option — no need to switch brands.
Put simply, Essential gives you the Megaflo badge where it counts, without paying extra for features most customers will never notice.
When Megaflo Eco Is Still Worth the Extra
We're not saying Eco is never the answer. Go for Eco when:
- You need a smaller cylinder. Anything under 170L means Eco.
- There's a long pipe run to the taps. Eco Indirect has secondary return; Essential Direct and Indirect don't.
- It's solar or PV diversion. Eco Solar and Solar PV Ready are built for it.
- Time on site is tight. SystemFit and SystemReady come pre-plumbed and pre-wired.
- Running costs or ErP ratings matter. Social housing specs or energy-conscious customers may justify the B rating.
- The customer wants the longest warranty. Thirty years is a strong selling point on a premium job
The Bottom Line
For most standard installs, Megaflo Essential is the smarter buy. It delivers the same hot water as Eco, fits in tighter spaces, and keeps the price down. Save Eco for the jobs that genuinely need it — small cylinders, solar, secondary return, or a 30-year warranty.
