There are two main types of hand dryer: hands-under and hands-in.
Hands-under dryers are the traditional type and they're still a brilliant, reliable choice for most washrooms.
Hands-in dryers are the newer type. You dip your hand down into the unit and jets of air blast the water off, collecting it neatly inside rather than sending it (and your sleeves) flying. Mitsubishi pioneered the idea, Dyson picked it up and ran with it, and now it's a genuinely popular category in its own right.
Hands-in dryers used to carry a premium price tag, and the top-end models still do, but there are some excellent value options now too, so don't assume hands-in automatically means expensive!
One thing worth bearing in mind: hands-in dryers need more wall space than the hands-under style, and they're not always the best fit for disabled or accessible washrooms.
