Are Noise Levels Important?

It is a fact of life that as hand had dryers have become more powerful, they have become louder.

The old-style hand dryers worked by generating enough heat to evaporate the water from your hands, so most of the ‘power’ used was in the amount of heat they had top generate. But modern hand dryers dry your hands in a different way. They use high speed motors to blast the water from your hands (and the heat that some of them throw in is really just for comfort).

This means that generally speaking, the more power you want from your hand dryer, the louder it will be.

So if your dryer will be placed in a noise-sensitive setting (for example, in an office environment and the wall backs on to a conference room, or a theatre where it is near the stage, or a school where children don't like the noise) you may need to compromise on the power of the hand dryer in order to get one which is not too loud.

There are some exceptions where the designers have explicitly concentrated on this as a feature of the dryer, and there are some dryers which can be turned down so you can try different power/sound level combinations.
