Electric Combi Boilers
An electric combi boiler runs your central heating and supplies hot water from one wall-hung unit, with no gas supply, flue or oil tank. That makes it a practical choice for flats, new builds and homes off the gas grid, and anywhere a flue would be difficult or costly to fit.
Which electric combi boiler suits your home?
- Flats and apartments: the EHC Astro 12kW and 14.4kW heat on demand and give instant hot water from a single-phase supply. The Advance Appliances ECB210 suits a one-bathroom electric apartment with four to five radiators.
- Small houses: the Trianco Aztec Maxi (8kW, 10kW and 12kW) heats water instantly and keeps a 38 litre store topped up, giving over 170 litres of hot water at 10 litres a minute. It works with Hive, Nest and similar controls.
- Higher hot water demand: the Heatrae Sadia Electromax (6kW or 9kW) has a 180 litre store built in, with versions for radiators or underfloor heating.
- Larger homes: the EHC Astro 24kW and 30kW need a three-phase supply.
What size electric combi boiler do I need?
Match the boiler's output to the heat loss of the property, then check the electricity supply. Most homes have a single-phase supply, which suits the smaller models here. A 24kW or 30kW boiler needs three-phase power, so ask your electrician before choosing one.
Running and installation costs
Electricity costs more per unit than gas, so running costs depend on your tariff and how well the home is insulated. Against that, there is no gas safety check, no flue and very little to service. Installation needs a qualified electrician or heating engineer, and models with an unvented hot water store, such as the Electromax, need a G3-qualified installer.
