What it does
The detection electrode sits in the flame and confirms to the PCB that the burner has lit. Without that signal the boiler shuts the gas off and locks out.
Signs it needs replacing
A boiler that lights briefly and then locks out, or shows an ignition or flame fault, often has a worn or dirty detection electrode.
