What it does
This is a combination component, which means it performs two jobs in one body. The thermostat side senses stored water temperature and switches the immersion element on and off to hold the set temperature. The thermal cut-out side is the safety half: if the water passes a fixed limit, it opens the circuit and locks the element out until it is reset or replaced. A combined unit is used so that both functions share one pocket in the vessel.
Symptoms of a failed thermostat
- Water runs far hotter than the setting, or the element never switches off
- No hot water at all, with the element receiving no supply
- Repeated nuisance tripping of the cut-out
- Temperature swinging widely between draw-offs

Installation
The unit must be isolated electrically and, depending on the pocket arrangement, may require draining before the stat can be withdrawn. Replacement by a qualified electrician is recommended.
