What it does
An immersion heater is the electric element that heats the stored water in a cylinder, either as the only heat source in a direct cylinder or as the back-up in an indirect one. Two things decide whether a replacement fits: the immersed LENGTH, which must suit the cylinder, and the BOSS THREAD it screws into. The sheath material decides how long it lasts - Incoloy resists the scale and pitting that kill a copper element in a hard water area, and titanium goes further still. No hot water from the immersion while the boiler side still works, or an RCD that trips when the immersion is switched on, usually means the element has failed.

Installation
Isolate the electrical supply and drain the cylinder below the immersion boss before removing an element; G3 qualified installation is required where the cylinder is unvented (Building Regulations Part G).
