Why These Components Matter

Expansion Vessels and pressure relief valves are two of the hardest working components in any unvented hot water system. As water heats up it expands, and without a properly functioning expansion vessel to absorb that increase in volume, pressure inside the system builds rapidly. The pressure relief valve acts as the last line of defence, releasing water if pressure climbs too high. Together, these components protect your system, your property, and everyone in it. 

Neglecting them is one of the most common causes of costly call outs and premature system failure. Under UK Building Regulations, unvented hot water systems must be regularly inspected and maintained, making this not just a matter of good practice but of legal compliance. 

Signs Your Expansion Vessel Needs Replacing

The most telling sign of a failing expansion vessel is a pressure relief valve that keeps dripping or discharging water. This happens because the vessel can no longer absorb the expansion of heated water, leaving the relief valve to do all the work instead. 

You might also notice pressure fluctuations at the tap, or a waterlogged vessel that feels completely solid when tapped rather than producing a hollow sound at the top. If the internal diaphragm has ruptured, the vessel fills entirely with water and loses its ability to buffer pressure changes. At this point, replacement is the only safe course of action. 

Signs Your Pressure Relief Valve Needs Replacing 

A pressure relief valve that weeps constantly, even after the expansion vessel has been checked and confirmed in a good condition, has almost certainly reached the end of its useful life. Relief valves are designed to open only under fault conditions, so repeated operation causes wear that prevents them from reseating properly. 

How Often Should I Replace Them? 

As a general rule, expansion vessels should be inspected annually and replaced every 5 to 10 years depending on the water quality and usage. Hard water areas in particular can accelerate wear on both components. Pressure relief valves are typically recommended for replacement every 5 years, or immediately if they show any signs of weeping or corrosion.

A Note on Gledhill Systems

Always use genuine or manufacturer approved parts to ensure compatibility and to maintain any remaining warranty on your system. 

Always Use A Qualified Plumber

Unvented hot water systems must by law be installed and serviced by a qualified engineer, typically someone holding a recognised hot water qualification, such as G3. Replacing expansion vessels and relief valves is not a DIY job, and attempting it without the correct credentials could invalidate your insurance and put occupants at risk.
