You would normally find an American Style Dryer being used commercially within businesses such as launderettes, care homes and hotels due to the fact that they are designed for high volume use. However, they are also increasing in popularity for use at home, in situations where families have a lot of laundry to process.

You can usually identify an American Style Dryer by the large top loading or drop down doors they have.

American Style Dryers normally have a drum capacity of around 15KG as opposed to the standard domestic types which are between 8-10KG.

In terms of power output, American Style Dryers are more powerful than standard domestic dryers and usually need to be hard-wired into your fuse board as they require a 30amp supply whereas a domestic dryer can be plugged into the wall as they only require a standard 13amp supply. This is not usually a problem in a commercial setting but can be inconvenient in the home, and so this aspect should be carefully considered.

The energy ratings of American Style Dryers are either D or E in comparison to a modern domestic dryer which for the most part fall into the B or A category. However, most modern American Style Dryers tend to have ‘heat sensing technology’ meaning it senses when a load of laundry is dry, stopping the cycle and so cutting down the overall running costs.

So, the key questions to ask yourself when deciding whether to buy an American Style Dryer are:

  • Do you want a larger and more powerful dryer to enable you to dry more laundry faster?
  • Do you want a dryer that is easier to load due to the large doors?
  • Do you have the facility for a 30amp electric supply?
  • Could this type of dryer cost more or less to run than a standard domestic unit?
