Effective pressure management is essential for the reliability and safety of any sealed heating system. The expansion vessel contains a flexible internal diaphragm that separates system water from a pre-charged air chamber; as pressure rises, the diaphragm compresses, absorbing expansion and stabilising system pressure. Without a properly functioning expansion vessel, pressure can rise rapidly, leading to frequent activation of the safety relief valve, water loss, and repeated need for system repressurisation. Persistent over-pressurisation can also accelerate wear on components such as pumps, heat exchangers, and seals.
Over time, expansion vessels can lose their air charge or suffer diaphragm fatigue, reducing their ability to absorb pressure changes effectively. This often presents as rising system pressure when the boiler heats, pressure dropping when the system cools, or regular discharge from the safety valve.
