The Intergas 844417 is a genuine half-inch pressure relief valve designed for use across a wide range of Intergas HRE Compact, Combi Compact, and ECO RF boilers. WRAS approved and manufactured to full OEM specification, this valve is one of the most safety-critical components in the entire boiler; its sole purpose is to protect the system from the consequences of uncontrolled pressure build-up.
Under normal operating conditions, a central heating system runs at between one and two bars of pressure. If something causes that pressure to rise beyond safe limits, whether through a faulty expansion vessel, an incorrectly set filling loop, thermal expansion in a sealed system, or a fault elsewhere in the boiler, the pressure relief valve is the last line of defence. When system pressure reaches three bar, the valve opens automatically, releasing water from the system and preventing the pressure from climbing to a level that could cause catastrophic damage to the heat exchanger, pipework, or other components. Once the pressure has dropped back to a safe level, the valve closes again. A pressure relief valve that is weeping, dripping persistently, or has discharged visibly onto the floor is not always a sign that the valve itself has failed. In many cases, it is telling you that system pressure is genuinely too high and needs investigation at the root cause. However, a PRV that has lifted and discharged can also sustain internal damage to its seat in the process, making it prone to weeping even after the system pressure is corrected. In this situation, the valve must be replaced, a weeping PRV is not a valve doing its job, it is a valve that can no longer hold a proper seal.
