The Intergas 74337 is a genuine combined ignition and ionisation electrode, designed to fit all Intergas HRE Compact, Combi Compact, and ECO RF boilers. This is the current approved replacement for the earlier part number 209327, and is one of the most commonly replaced wear items across the entire Intergas boiler range. Unlike many boiler designs that use separate electrodes for ignition and flame sensing, the Intergas 74337 is a single combined unit that performs both functions, generating the spark that lights the burner and monitoring the ionisation signal that proves a stable flame is present.
Understanding how both functions work together is important for any engineer diagnosing an ignition fault on an Intergas boiler. When the boiler receives a demand for heat, the ignition module energises the electrode, which generates a high-voltage spark across a precisely set gap between the electrode tip and the burner body. This spark ignites the gas and air mixture at the burner. Once the flame is established, the same electrode passes a very small ionisation current through the flame, typically a few microamps, back to the ignition module. The module reads this signal and confirms to the boiler's PCB that a genuine flame is present. If that signal is absent or too weak, the boiler shuts the gas valve and locks out, preventing an unlit gas flow from continuing.
Because the electrode performs both of these safety-critical roles, even a small amount of wear, carbon contamination, or physical damage can significantly degrade its performance. A cracked ceramic insulator, a tip that has eroded from repeated sparking, a gap that has widened over time, or a layer of carbon built up on the electrode tip can all reduce the strength of both the spark and the ionisation signal, leading to intermittent ignition failures, nuisance lockouts, and fault codes that can easily be misdiagnosed as ignition module or gas valve issues.
