What Does A Pump Do For My Boiler?

In the modern household or commercial property, nearly all Boilers, Gas or otherwise, will come equipped with a Water Pump. But what does the Water Pump actually do? What is its function in your water system, and why do we need one? This question is especially important when discussing flow boilers, or heating-only boilers, as many of these (like the Premier Heat or Amptec ranges we offer on site) require additional purchase of a Water Pump in order to function correctly.

What Is A Water Pump?

Put simply, a Water Pump is designed to push hot water that's been heated around the household. The water in the system would simply sit static without the pump, so heating the water would be pointless, as radiators require hot water to circulate through the pipework and return to the boiler once cool in order to maintain or adjust to the heating needs of the users. It is the kinetic element that pushes water through the pipes of the house. Here is an incredible diagram and explanation excerpt from anchorpumps.com:

"The central heating pump is like the heart of your heating system. They work by taking water into the pump, pressurising the water with the impellers, before pumping the water around your heating system at a higher speed." - Anchor Pumps

Which One Should I Buy?

Luckily, where it comes to Boilers on our website, we have you covered! Most of the Boilers we offer on-site come with the pump already included or baked into the cost we show, some great examples are the Heatrae Sadia Electromax, the Trianco Mini System, or the EHC Astro, all of which cater to central heating needs without a gas supply, and come pre-built with pumps. There are a few series that we don't offer pumps as standard, the Premier Heat & Amptec ranges from Heatrae Sadia, as well as the Trianco TRI selection., & Slim Jim from EHC. Luckily, we have a package that works for any of these options, providing both Water Pump and Expansion Vessel suitable for any of these units, found here:

The Grundfos UPS3 here is our recommended Water Pump, as one of the best in class for effectiveness and price. As you can see in this link, it shouldn't break the bank and ensures you get many years of the highest standards of use & minimal maintenance from your heat-only Flow Boiler.
