Choosing split-system air conditioning can seem rather confusing, so here is a guide which should make the selection process a little simpler:

There are 2 types of split system.

First, there are the packs which contain one indoor unit, one outdoor unit and the connecting pipework and controls. If you only have one room to cool (or heat), for example an office, a conservatory or you only want air conditioning in one room of the house, then it makes sense to choose one of these.

There are 4 sizes:

9000 BTU, rated at 2.7kw – for rooms from 13 – 25 square metres

12000 BTU, rated at 3.5kw – for rooms from 16 – 30 square meters

18000 BTU, rated at 5.7kw - for rooms from 25 – 45 square meters

24000 BTU, rated at 7.0kw - for rooms from 34 – 60 square meters

These complete systems are available in either white or black finish.

The other way of buying split systems would suit multi-room or multi-area installations, where more than one inside unit is required. These tend to be known as ‘Multi-split’ systems. Depending upon distances involved, several indoor units of varying types or capacities could be used with a single appropriate outdoor unit.

These outdoor units are offered in 2 different ratings:

27000 BTU, rated at around 9kw  - for up to 3 indoor units

36000 BTU, rated at around 12kw – for up to 5 indoor units

Once the outdoor unit has been decided upon/specified, then the various indoor units would be selected.

The higher level wall mounting indoor units start at 9000 BTU and go up to 18000 BTU, as do the console versions (for low-wall or ceiling suspended mounting) and the ceiling cassette units (for suspended ceilings).

The Mix & Match multi split system pipe kits need to be purchased with each of the indoor air conditioning units. They come in 2, 4 or 6 meters in length but can be joined (with supplied unions) to make longer pipe runs as needed. These are typically up to 20m on the Multi-Split systems.

All the air conditioning products mentioned here can be used for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter.
