Air Sterilisers - What do I need?

we started this article in 2021 when the workforce was just returning from the dreaded COVID lockdown, but we feel this topic is still as important as ever in the modern work environment

Before now, air sterilisers were not really commonplace or regarded as a necessity, but moving forward we feel it will most definitely become a lot more important. Air sterilisation in the workplace is important for several reasons, airborne pathogens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can negatively impact worker's quality of life and overall experience in the workplace. We here at Electrical Deals Direct are lucky to receive the benefits of the Aeramax III Pure View - which we can personally attest makes the room feel cleaner and does not give that "air con" atmosphere that many sterile locations like Hospitals can give off.

So What Does an Air Steriliser Do?

Air sterilisers (also known as sanitisers) essentially suck in air from the room, clean it and send it back out into the room. They offer a purifying factor, which could be achieved in a multitude of ways such as use of HEPA Filters, UV-C Lighting, or Activated Carbon Filters. But more than this, a steriliser (as opposed to a filter or a purifier) uses processes to condition the air that is emitted, effectively turning this air into a cleaning agent for both the space and surfaces.

There are a few different choices of units, but the selection process is fairly straightforward and is centred around two questions:

  1. Is the space to be sterilised continuously occupied?
  2. What size is the space?

Some air sanitisers are not suitable for environments where there is constant occupancy, due to the type of process used to clean the air. These are generally known as washroom units and they are designed to tackle unpleasant odours as well as eliminate virus and bacteria particles. There are 2 types of these: low to medium-usage ones which tend to go up to around 25m2, and higher footfall versions which have a fan to help penetrate deeper into the area, up to 40m2. These styles make the best use of Activated Carbon Filters, which can assist in odour removal and lend to a fresher-smelling washroom space. In addition, usage of UVC Lighting can help washroom users feel confident when paired with UV lighting or Blue Lights on Hand Dryers ensuring washroom users peace of mind.

In continually occupied spaces such as offices, care homes and retail spaces there are suitable sterilisers for areas up to 80m2. A lot of these are completely silent, with the larger ones having a quiet fan to assist with the distribution of sanitised air in larger spaces.

Other examples of settings suited to this type of unit would be changing rooms, kitchens & food preparation areas, care home lounges, corridors, reception/waiting areas and nurseries. Many of these location styles make demand of the HEPA standard of filtration,
