Tap Water Health: Why you might consider making the switch to Water-Filtered Taps

In the United Kingdom, drinking water is treated with various chemicals to ensure that it is safe to consume. These chemicals are added to kill harmful bacteria and viruses, remove impurities, and improve the taste and odour of the water. Here are some of the most common chemicals added to the UK's drinking water supply, following this we shall talk about the benefits of having a Water Filter in as objective a manner as possible.

Chlorine: Chlorine is added to Much of the country's drinking water to kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful micro-organisms. It is effective in removing most types of pathogens, but it can also react with organic matter in the water to form byproducts, compounds such as trihalomethanes, which are potentially harmful to human health according to some research. Whilst we can be assured in the UK any additions to our water supply are in good faith and oriented to assist in public health, consistent consumption of such chemicals can lead to adverse health effects. Thus, we could always recommend the use of a Water Filter should the various effects of water chlorination be undesirable.

Fluoride: Fluoride is added to drinking water to prevent tooth decay. It has been shown to be effective in reducing cavities, especially in children. However, excessive fluoride intake can cause dental fluorosis, a condition that affects the appearance of teeth. Whilst this is merely a cosmetic - Studies such as "The Dangers of Fluoride" by Michael Greger highlight the negative press and propaganda around Fluoride in tap waters, those in a position to remove this side effect as such could do so with water filtration like that which we offer on-site.

Aluminium Sulphate: Aluminium sulphate is added to drinking water to remove impurities such as sediment, bacteria, and algae. However, it has been reported that prolonged or excessive intake of aluminium can cause health problems such as brain damage and Alzheimer's disease. Again whilst the average user can be confident that UK water bodies do not add, and also, regulate & remove excessive or unsafe levels of this substance (also called Alum). The negative health problems over a long period of time are confirmable, the Scotsman reported on Aluminium sulphate's effects in a handy article Available Here.

Chloramines: Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and ammonia that are added to drinking water to kill bacteria and viruses. They are less reactive than chlorine and produce fewer byproducts, but they can cause skin irritation and other health problems in some people. More on Chloramines Here , Anglian Water offers a wonderful FAQ where in which they explain the implementation and use of Chloramines in water, which are absolutely vital in ensuring public water access does not come with any infections or nasty diseases carried in the water, f.e. Legionella.

Although the UK's drinking water is safe to consume, some people prefer to use a water filter to remove these chemicals and impurities. Water filters can be installed on a kitchen tap or a standalone jug, and they use various technologies such as activated carbon, ceramic, and reverse osmosis to remove contaminants from the water.
