If you have started shopping for a boiling water tap, two names come up again and again: Quooker and Zip. We sell Zip, along with Calomax, Hyco, Instanta, Burco, and Marco at the counter top end. Since we have no Quooker, we are in a position to give you a genuinely straight comparison of what actually differs between these two leading approaches and, just as importantly, when neither of them is the right answer at all.
Two Very Different Design Philosophies
Understanding why these products exist helps you choose the right one. Quooker's approach centres on a small, highly insulated undersink tank kept at pressure and temperature, designed specifically for the domestic kitchen. It does the job very well and the brand has built a strong following in the home market as a result.
The Zip HydroTap takes a different path. Originally developed for commercial environments, it is a filtered, multi-functional system that prioritises dispensing volume, filtration quality, and the ability to deliver multiple water types from a single tap. It has since been scaled for domestic use, but its commercial DNA remains a genuine strength wherever volume and reliability matter most.
Neither approach is wrong. They are solving different problems for different users.
What Are You Actually Choosing Between
How many water types from one tap. This is the biggest practical difference and the biggest price driver. The number of water functions you select shapes both the purchase price and your running costs significantly. Here is how the Zip HydroTap range breaks down:
| Configuration | Example Model | Price |
| Boiling Only | Zip HydroTap Arc G5 Boiling 160 H52706700UK | £2,329.96 |
| Boiling and Ambient | Zip HydroTap BA160G5 |
£2441.75 |
| Boiling, Hot and Cold | Zip HydroTap BH160 G5 H55806Z00UK | £2639.22 |
| Boiling, Chilled, and Sparkling | Zip HydroTap BCS160/175 G5 H55762Z00UK |
£5855.00 |
Filtration: The HydroTap range uses replaceable 0.2 micron filters, with separate speciications for home and workplace use. Filters are a genuine, recurring cost and belong in any honest comparison. Ask us for prices for filters to suit the tap you want!
Dispensing capacity: The 160 and 240 figures in the model names refer to different boiling capacities. For a ho usehold, either is more than ample. For an office, the larger capacity matters at 10:30am when everyone wants a drink at once. Tell us your headcount and we will advise the capacity you need.
Commercial heritage: If you are fitting a staff room,a dental practice, a salon, or a trade counter, the HydroTap is built for that level of duty and the servicing infrastructure exists to support it. This is where it is strongest, and where any direct comparison with a domestic focused Quooker become least relevant.
When a Tap is The Wrong Answer Entirely
For many workplaces. it genuinely is. A wall mounted or counter top water boiler does exactly the same job for a fraction of the price. If nobody needs the appliance to look like a kitchen tap, this is where the real value sits. We would rather tell you that than sell you a £6,000 unit you did not need.

What We Are Not Claiming
- We have not bench tested a Quooker against a Zip. This compares design approach, configuration and published specification, not measured real world performance
- Quooker tanks are well regarded for their insulation. If standby consumption is your deciding factor, obtain the declare figure for both and compare on a like or like basis
- Installation requirements differ between systems and between individual mdoels. Always check the specifics before you commit to a purchase.
